About Côtes du Rhône AOC wines...AOC (Appelation d'Origine Contrôlée) status is granted in recognition of standards governing maximum yield, vineyard demarcation, and grape varieties used, cultivation methods, and the harvesting and vinification techniques used by the winemaker. In France, a national body known as the INAO, establishes whether a wine can be AOC Before AOC status can be granted, tasting and analysis is carried out to establish the authenticity and quality of wines. Côtes du Rhône was awarded AOC quality status in 1937.
AOC Côtes du Rhône Crus - The Southern Crus, from Montélimar to Avignon are Red, Rosé and White Vaqueyras, Red and White Châteauneuf du Pape, Red, Rosé and White Lirac and Rosé Tavel.
AOC Côtes du Rhône Villages covers some great wines - www.cave-cairanne.fr , www.rasteau.com and www.vignerons-roiax-seguret.fr will give you details of three of the many excellent Caves Cooperatives in the region.
